I’ll Give You This One for That One: A Little Sports Trading Pin History

sports trading pinsSports pin trading is a major craze. Who could think that tiny pieces of colorful metal could create so much fervor amongst droves of people? Sports pin trading has become such a serious trade, that when game seasons come around, for some traders, it’s all about the lapel pins, not the games.

How did such a serious hobby develop? Well, it is reported that sports trading pins have their history rooted in the Olympic Games. At the 1896 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, athletes, judges, and officials wore small cardboard-like badges that at the time were primarily a form of identification. Then in 1900, the first metal pin was created for the Games of the II Olympiad, which was held in Paris.

There’s some ambiguity about when the first National Olympic Committee team pin was made. Purportedly, Sweden made the first true NOC pin for the 1906 Olympic Games, in national colors of blue and yellow. Canada’s first NOC pin was made for the 1908 Games held in London. Little Leagues’ Start Up Around the Country

All across the country, in both urban and rural communities, sports trading pins are being collected. There are millions of youngsters and their parents gearing up for the Little League season. With over 6,000 leagues around the country (both baseball and softball), and over 3 million children playing each year, it is a spectacular family friendly sport and a great way to connect with neighboring communities.

The mission of the national Little League Baseball organization is “to promote, develop, supervise, and voluntarily assist in all lawful ways, the interest of those who will participate in Little League Baseball and Softball.” Each year, they live up to that mission statement by providing children and community members with an active way to explore and learn about baseball, team work, and what it means to be part of the community. Little League Baseball and Softball provide a healthy, character building activity for youths all over the country.
